Diagrams in China and Europe

Michael Lackner (Universität Göttingen)

This paper is based on a comparison between late 13th century diagrams of the Jinhua school which tried to illustrate key sentences from the Classics (or the newly established daoxue orthodoxy) on the one hand, and late medieval European diagrams (illustrating the division of sciences or the ontological tenets of Aristotelian philosophy) on the other. I will focus on those diagrams which function without additional symbols. Both kinds of diagrams offered the possibility of a non-linear reading of central texts or concepts which opened up the way for a literate textual practice sui generis. In spite of what one might expect, the differences do not lie in the ways of representation; rather, the genres of the chosen texts do vary.
