The earliest and completest collection of data in order to draw the general map in Tang Dynasty

Wang Qianjin (CAS, Beijing)

One of the important questions is existing in the study of Chinese traditional cartography, so far we could not find a collection of data in order to draw the general map. The author has found the collection of data in Yuan He Jun Xian Tu Zhi (recorded of Jun and Xian during the Yuan He period) by Ji Li Fu in A.D. 813, and expounded and proved that it is the earliest and completest collection of data in order to draw the general map.

The book recorded with system sixteen directions and distance from prefecture-seats or region-seats to other places, the direction and distance from county-seats to prefecture-seats or region-seats, the direction and distance from places under county to county-seats. Actually, the distances in book were not straight distances, but traveling distances, land route and water route.

According to the record of the directions and distances in the book, the author has found that the polar coordinates projection has been used in drawing ancient Chinese star charts.
