Ancient Sand mould Casting, Created in Xing Mang (9 - 23 A.D.)

It has been clear whether or not there was sand mould casting in ancient China, but opinions vary from person about the origin and its development. By studying and analyzing a wide variety of ancient coins, oblique engraving lines, hem casting keepers, positioning stars were found to be on a great number of ancient coins. Through a further study and comparison on various coin casting methods in the history, it has proved that the above mentioned three phenomena appeared on the coins did shape only in the making shape process of sand mould or different positioning of mother coins. They were impossible to appear on the coins in other coin casting methods, such as stone mould casting, metal mould casting and hemmed clay casting.

Things are clear about the coins issued in the history, especially from Qin and Han Dynasties. The origin can date back to Xing Mang (9 - 23 A.D.) according to the three phenomena in the making shape of sand mould. Huoquan pancake coins were its earliest sand casting products.

Compared a casting Huoquan pancake coin with other more than a hundred pancake coins, we find that the making shape of its cavity on some pancake coins is similar to that of modern one by using different moulds. This article tries to make a simple explanation about it.
