From Agricultural to Urban-Industrial Land Use: The Transformation of the Yangtze River Delta

Fragmentized and hybrid metropolitan landscapes in the Yangtze River Delta.

Wann: Montag, 15. Dezember 2014, 16:00-18:00 Uhr

Wo: Marchstr. 23 , 10587 Berlin, Raum MAR 0.015

Inhalt (English)

The Yangtze River Delta  is one of the most densely populated and urbanized regions in China. It consists mainly of alluvial plains that have a long history of intensive agricultural land use with sophisticated irrigation systems. China’s reform and opening-up policy since 1978,  transformed the delta lands from an agricultural area into a mixed urban-industrial region due to rapid urbanization, industrialization, commercial activities and tourism. Historic landscape structures are gradually swallowed and destroyed by modern infrastructures. Local residents are hardly aware of this transformation in their ordinary, everyday built environments.

In this lecture, Ms. Xie Yuting (Ph.D. Candidate at TU Munich), explores the formation of fragmentized and hybrid metropolitan landscapes in the Yangtze River Delta. Ms. Xie will discuss the transformation of land and the influence of this process on the existence and quality of valuable rural cultural landscapes, especially in the dynamic boundaries between urban and rural areas. The lecture further introduces possibilities of protecting and maintaining typical cultural landscape structures through a landscape architecture approach which could mediate the conflicts between historic and modern infrastructures as well as conservation practice and future development.
