China as an emerging superpower: social dynamics, political, cultural and intellectual trends in the recent decades (HS/SE)

There is much talk about China becoming the superpower of the 21st century, and Xi Jinping seems keen to claim the position of an ailing United States in the international arena. While there are attempts to offer global governance under Chinese leadership, several studies say China is not ready yet to fulfil this role. The country is experiencing rapid changes not only on the social and economic level, but necessarily in the political and cultural domain, as well – changes that create stress and a constant need for negotiations. The course focuses on the complex problems of today’s China and provides contextual understanding for those who wish to navigate their careers with a possible inclusion of China. No former knowledge is required, but the course relies heavily on the students’ independent research and active discussion.
