HS/SE: "An Innovation Nation or Copycat Culture? China’s Journey from Confucius to Creativity"
The People’s Republic of China is no longer just a world’s factory for fake brands and cheap electronics. Rising global visibility of tech giants such as Alibaba, Huawei or WeChat has challenged the traditional Western perception of China as copycat culture. Recently, the country has begun to shape the world also in science and key technologies – has China become an innovation nation? Or is it by nature of its political regime and historical development unable of state-of-the-art breakthroughs? This seminar introduces you to selection of local innovation case studies (e-commerce, IT, mobile payments, social media) as a lens to learn about contemporary China. The goal is to get practical understanding about Chinese home-grown innovation, and the role of the government, the Party and the private sector in its key concepts, policies, entrepreneurship, and business.
