Towards the Future Garden City——the Public Transformation of the Chinese Classical Garden
As daily life increasingly becomes the theme of public life in Chinese cities, Chinese Classical Gardens as private spaces are proving to be a new type of urban public space that can bring new cultural vitality to public life. This course will start with the cultural roots of the Chinese Classical Garden, develop cultural understanding and interpretation of classical gardens from three dimension: material environment, artistic aesthetics, and spiritual philosophy. A series of case studies carried out in different urban gardens at Suzhou will also be specifically introduced to visualize the unique value of classical Chinese gardens in the construction of a garden city strategy in China.
