Social and cultural mobility: Education, the urban-rural divide and emerging visions of China (HS/SE)
What strikes everyone when first getting into China is the country’s extreme mobility – both in the physical and in the abstract sense. The course offers an overview of the major transformations in the country in the recent decades, then focuses on the problems of today in connection with urbanization and upward mobility. Not only social dynamics, but also cultural and intellectual trends will be addressed. The course ends with current domestic theories about China’s future trajectory. No prior knowledge is required, but the course relies heavily on the students’ independent research and active discussion.
