HS/SE: "History of Water Management in China"

This course outlines the history of China from the early empire to the People’s Republic through the lens of water. Students will not only learn about the technologies used to control and manage water, but also familiarise themselves with the politics and culture of water control in China. How was man’s mastery over water deemed a moral and political responsibility, celebrated as the triumph of the (Chinese) Civilisation, and construed as evidence for imperial legitimacy by China’s political elites for over two millennia? How did this tradition inform the Chinese state’s approaches to the environmental issues today? By addressing these questions, China: A Water History provides students with a clearer understanding of (1) the deep historical roots of China’s contemporary water problems and their solutions; (2) how the need for water control (flood control, irrigation and navigation) shaped China’s political economy; and (3) how the discourse about water control was articulated in China’s political culture and why this pertains to our contemporary environmental crises in a global context.
