“The Rise of China and the End of the World as We Know It” – this is the title of a 2017 article by sinologist Arif Dirlik, and the starting point for our course. Hopes for a better world came first with the rise of China in the 1980s and 1990s, followed by a gradual sense of bitterness that has given place to straightforward rivalry in the past few years. What are the reasons for this? In the first third of the course we will look into the domestic political and social challenges China is facing – comparing these to the domestic situations in certain European states and the US. In the second one we will focus on the USA-EU-China triangle from several perspectives including geopolitics, trade and technology. In the final third the specific questions the EU is facing today in relation to China will be analysed. The course supports a lively exchange of perspectives, encourages the use of a wide range of materials and provides ground for debates.
